The research platform uses your phone and Samsung Galaxy Watch together to collect and synthesize data. The watch collects health data throughout the day (heart rate, steps, sleep, etc.). The phone acts as a hub that receives data from the watch. The data is sent securely to the research backend. Data automatically syncs between devices when they’re connected. If the watch disconnects, the data is stored on the watch and is transferred once reconnected.

Yes, we have several security features to protect your data. Your Samsung account requires authentication to verify your identity. Data is encrypted to protect information during transfers. Participant consent is required before any data collection begins. You can configure the data retention so researchers can set how long data is kept. Participants can also view their data collection status and manage their participation.

To use the research platform effectively, you’ll need to have a high level of technical proficiency in Kotlin programming language, Amazon Web Services for infrastructure and development, and knowledge of sensors and biomarkers in a mobile and wearable setting.

No, you don’t need to use our research platform. However, our platform makes it easier for you to view all the data you collected in one dashboard. Samsung also offers limited support to help you set up and configure the dashboard to suit your study needs.

You’ll need a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone, Samsung Galaxy Watch, the Samsung Health app, a Samsung account, stable internet connection, and necessary permissions granted to the study app (sensors, notifications, background activity, etc.).
