Samsung Health Sensor SDK

The Samsung Health Sensor SDK is a set of software-building tools that researchers and developers can use to build an application for their research study. It supports health tracking capabilities that allow applications to track user health data and provide access to various health features.

The SDK is compatible with Samsung Galaxy phones and watches. With the SDK, Samsung Galaxy Watches are able to track user health data with the accelerometer, raw ECG, PPG, heart rate, body composition, skin temperature, and various other biomarkers.

Visit our developer website to learn more about Samsung Health Sensor SDK and to download the SDK.

After you download the Samsung Health Sensor SDK, you’ll be able to use the Samsung Research Platform.

Samsung Devices

Compatible Samsung phones and watches are needed to use the Samsung Research Platform. We have a variety of devices available for purchase as a part of the IGNITE program. For a full list of eligible devices, download the IGNITE application form.
Visit samsung.com for more details about individual devices.

As a part of the IGNITE program, Samsung is offering a discount of 10% on eligible Samsung Galaxy Phones and 20% on Galaxy Watches. There are no limits on the number of devices researchers can purchase for their study. If a proposal is approved, an email with a discount code and a link to purchase will be sent to the recipient. This code will expire after 30 days. If a proposal is approved, but the number of devices that were requested needs to be amended, contact us at ignite@samsung.com.

Researchers can use the purchased Samsung devices for their next study. However, we ask to be notified if the devices are used and when the new study will be published.

Samsung Research Platform

Samsung’s Research Platform is a comprehensive software solution designed for research teams, comprising of researchers and software engineers, to conduct and manage digital health studies. They’ll be able to design studies, configure data collection, build custom research applications, and analyze findings within one integrated environment.

The Research Platform, combined with the Samsung Health app and Samsung wearables, gives research teams many capabilities.

  • Collaborative Study Design: Developers and researchers work together to define study parameters, customize settings, and establish participant protocols.
  • Flexible Data Collection: Gather data from phone sensors, Galaxy Watches, and Samsung Health metrics tailored to your research needs.
  • Custom Research Apps: Build participant-facing apps where you can define study logic and data collection rules.
  • Real-Time Monitoring: Track participant engagement, device usage, and protocol compliance.
  • Participant Privacy: Give study participants transparent control over data permissions and visibility.

Supported Devices and Data Types

The platform currently supports Samsung phones and Galaxy Watches. You can use Samsung devices to collect data using various sensors and the app.

  • Phone sensors: Movement (accelerometer), device orientation, ambient light, proximity, and audio recordings
  • Watch sensors: Heart rate, steps, calories burned, sleep patterns, blood oxygen (SpO2), ECG, skin temperature, and exercise activities
  • Samsung Health data: Blood pressure, blood glucose, nutrition, water intake, weight and body composition, and exercise summaries
