Perceptually Motivated Bitrate Allocation for Object-Based Audio Using Opus Codec

Abstract

We reviewed the performance of the opus codec for object-based audio using two different bit-allocation strategies: a vanilla method that uses the same bitrate for each object and joint allocation method that distributes the total bitrate among objects using their energy-based perceptual importance. Proposed joint allocation significantly outperformed the vanilla method at the same total bitrate and achieved an Excellent score during MUSHRA testing.
